چکیده

-Diethylnitrosamine (DENA) at 10 mg/kg/day was fed to adult rats either continuously or for periods ranging from 1 to 10 weeks. Survival correlated inversely with the duration of carcinogen feeding. Less than 4 weeks of DENA feeding produced only preneoplastic foci that persisted indefinitely; 4 weeks were found to be necessary for the transformation of preneoplastic lesions into liver cancers; after 6 weeks, the incidence of hepatomas was 100%. The process of liver cancerization appeared to be identical whether DENA was fed for 8 weeks or continuously up to the time of death. These results are discussed in the light of the evolution of the homoeostatic control of liver-cell division during DENA feeding, in order to distinguish the different successive roles played by the carcinogen.

Contests over reproductive resources in female roller beetles: Outcome predictors and sharing as an option

Fights among females are frequent, although less attention has been placed on them than on male fights. They arise when females compete for food, oviposition, mates, brooding sites, or access to resources which increase offspring survival. It has been shown that the outcome of female fights may be less predictable by asymmetries in resource holding power, than in male fights. Male roller beetle...

What factors contribute to an ownership advantage?

In most taxa, owners win fights when defending a territory against intruders. We calculated effect sizes for four factors that potentially contribute to an 'owner advantage'. We studied male fiddler crabs Uca mjoebergi, where owners won 92% of natural fights. Owners were not more successful because they were inherently better fighters (r=0.02). There was a small effect (r=0.18) of the owner's k...

Female monkeys use both the carrot and the stick to promote male participation in intergroup fights.

Group-level cooperation often poses a social dilemma in which joint action may be difficult to achieve. Theoretical models and experimental work on humans show that social incentives, such as punishment of defectors and rewarding of cooperators, can promote cooperation in groups of unrelated individuals. Here, we demonstrate that these processes can operate in a non-human animal species, and be...

Aggression among finishing pigs following mixing in kennelled and unkennelled accommodation

This study examines the interactive effects of mixing and the provision of kennels to finishing pigs on agonistic behaviour. Pigs were housed either in naturally ventilated kennelled accommodation, or in an unkennelled sloping floor accommodation with automatically controlled natural ventilation (ACNV). Under each of these two housing conditions, three groups of 10 pigs were subjected to one of...
